Childe Hassam visited Venice in 1883 while on tour through Europe. This trip yielded many watercolors (and some oils) which Hassam subsequently exhibited at the Boston gallery of Williams and Everett in a show titled Water Colors by Hassam. That show of 67 works, included six Venetian subjects; the present work may have been exhibited as On the Lagoon,no. 27 in the show. More

Frederick Childe Hassam (October 17, 1859 – August 27, 1935) was a prolific American Impressionist painter, noted for his urban and coastal scenes. Hassam was instrumental in promulgating Impressionism to American collectors, dealers, and museums. He produced over 3,000 paintings, oils, watercolors, etchings, and lithographs over the course of his career, and was an influential American artist of the early 20th century. More
