14 Antique Religious Carvings - Sculptures from the Bible


Madonna and Child carved Southern German, 17th century. In wood, hollowed out, focus, painted and gilded.The arms of the Infant Jesus and the right forearm Mary missing, toe spec. H. 78 cm

Grape Madonna Southern Germany / Austria, 15th century. Basswood, full round carved, flattened back, polychrome and partially gilded. On profiled, marbled base. Full figure standing Maria with high leaf crown, holding the naked Christ Child in her left arm. In her right hand she holds a bunch of grapes. The childlike captured Jesusknaben with red cheeks with both hands holding a bird in front of his body. Partial loss of substance, as amended. Minor missing parts, min. rest. H. 97 cm (without base) Grape Madonna were part of the religious art and the culture of wine. They were found mainly in the German-speaking world, in wine-growing regions of Austria and Tirol on Süddeutsche up in Rhenish wine country. The grape symbolized the blood of Christ shed on the cross that Mary passes on mankind to salvation.


Saint Rochus Swabia around 1520 carved in in softwood, begradet back, caught and polychrome painted. Outside of the jacket covered with gold leaf. The standing on a later base Holy indicated by the right hand of his exposed thigh with a bleeding wound. In his left hand the pilgrim's staff. Paint freshened later. H. 81 cm in some regions is considered one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers Rochus and is considered the patron saint of plague victims, prisoners, the sick, the doctors, pharmacists, farmers, gardeners, carpenters, gravediggers and art dealers.

Evangelist John Schwaben of Tyrol, 17th century. Fully shaped very finely carved, ducted, painted and partially gilded wood sculpture of John standing on a round base, in his right hand he wears a feather in his left hand an open book. Painted with signs of age. H. 50 cm (without later rectangular base). The presentation and quality of cut can be associated with Johann Patsch in Landeck, Tirol.

Saint Barbara Southern German, 18th century. Fully shaped carved wooden figure, focus, painted and partially gilded. The crowned Holy Barbara stands on a round base, their rights points to her heart, in her left hand she wears her attribute, the tower. Left forearm supplemented with tower, painted with signs of age. H. 64 cm

Christ in the dungeon (Wies Saviour) Bayern, 2nd H. 18th century. Fully shaped carved, succinct and painted Christ figurines made of wood with iron chain, chained to the whipping post, in, the dungeon imitative box with relief ornaments of the Baroque. Finger best partial., Rest left arm and left leg. H. 43.5 cm The execution took place after 1730 made miraculous image in the Wieskirche near Steingaden.

Saint Florian on reliquary Süddeutsch, E. 18th century. / A. 19th century. Fully shaped carved, ducted, painted, partially gilded and silvered wooden sculpture, representing St. Florian in armor with cape and banner. In cross section, rectangular base with frontal glassed cartridge with fine Klosterarbeit and central relic, bez. '' Maurityg ''. H. with flag 51.5 cm

Holy Anna, Maria reading teaching Southern German, circa 1700 Fully shaped carved, ducted and polychrome painted wooden sculpture on a square hollow base with baroque ornaments. Mary as a girl with crown reaches for a open book, holding her mother in her left hand. Finger and coronets best partial., Partially paint chipping.H. 43 cm (54 cm with base).

Woman of the Apocalypse Alpenländisch, probably Italy, 18th century. Fully shaped in wood carved, ducted, polychrome painted figure, outside of Cape gilded. The Mother of God is crowned with silver crown in a praying position, at their feet the crescent moon and a cloudscape with three angels' heads. In curving, gilded pedestal with volute feet and four fully plastic, naturalistically painted cherubs. Version partly chipped. H. 53 cm (with base and crown).

The Holy Nepomuk and Ignatius January Georg Schwanthaler, Gmunden (attr.), End of the 18th century. Fully shaped in wood finely carved, polychrome painted figures. Saint Ignatius with attributes, Holy Nepomuk lacking in typical clothes, crucifix. In stepped rectangular base. Partially signs of age. H. 15 cm JG Schwanthaler among others have been known for many small reliefs, nativity figurines and statuettes. He came from the famous carver family, his great-grandfather was Thomas Schwanthaler in Ried (1634-1707).



Wooden sculpture,  Calumny 'Alpenländisch, 18C Fully shaped carved in wood depicting the Allegory of Slander: A wrapped in a vast blanket act, kicking with his right foot on a bellows. In later, articulated base with baroque ornaments. Min. Rest. H. 21 m (30 cm with base). The bellows is considered as an attribute of defamation, one of the three vice. The virtues were shown eg. In a painting by Louis Silvestre at the Dresden Palace 1719 with envy as a mask of anger with Medusa and the slander with bellows.

Two terracotta figures Spain, 18th / 19th C. Fully shaped molded Woman of the Apocalypse and standing Mary with the baby Jesus, polychrome painted. A crown is missing. H. 13 and 15 cm

The disciple John Augsburg, Ehrgott Bernhard Bendl (attributed), around 1700. Fully shaped carved, ducted and original wooden painted sculpture, probably of a crucifixion group. Saint John stands with folded hands and after half-right inverted head in a long, held by a clasp robe. Glued nose on his fingers vertical crack. H. 87 cm Ehrgott Bernhard Bendl (also Bendel, pendulum and Pendl to 1660-1738) was born into a famous family of sculptors with branches in Vienna and Prague. From 1684 to 1687 he was in the workshop of Johann Jakob rills engaged in Augsburg, where he in 1687 the master and probably in the same year acquired the civil rights.Henceforth Bendl was one of the leading sculptors of Augsburg. 1701/02 and 1706/07, he was head of the sculptors' guild.

Woman of the Apocalypse Asia, probably Goa for the Portuguese market, probably 17th / 18th centuries.Century. In the nature of Gothic Madonnas in ivory carved, with traces of former paint. Hands are missing, partly spec. H. 17 cm
