Ghardaïa is the capital city of Ghardaïa Province, Algeria. Ghardaïa is part of a pentapolis, a hilltop city amongst four others, built almost a thousand years ago in the M’Zab valley. It was founded by the Mozabites, an Ibadi sect of the Amazigh Muslims.

The name of Ghardaïa has its origins in a female saint named Daïa who lived in a cave in the area before it blossomed into a town inhabited by Ibadite Muslims who came to escape persecution from Fatimite Muslims in the north. More on Ghardaïa

Fantasia is a traditional exhibition of horsemanship in the Maghreb performed during cultural festivals and to close Maghrebi wedding celebrations. "Fantasia" is an imported name, the actual traditional term used is lab el baroud.

The performance consists of a group of horse riders, all wearing traditional clothes, who charge along a straight path at the same speed so as to form a line, and then at the end of the charge (about two hundred meters) fire into the sky using old muskets or muzzle-loading rifles The difficulty of the performance is in synchronizing the movement of the horses during acceleration of the charge, and especially in firing the guns simultaneously so that one single shot is heard. The horse is referred to as a fantasia horse and are of Arabian, Andalusian or Barb stock. More on Fantasia

George Corominas is the son of a Spanish painter. He was born in 1945. After studying in Algeria at the National School of Fine Arts of Algiers, he returned to France in 1962 where his paintings were quickly noticed. George Corominas' work is influenced by the work of famous Spanish painters such as Goya, Murillo, Velasquez and Dali. But the painter is also inspired by English painter Turner, for his blurred technique.

George Corominas is admired for his precise lines and for his use of colors. His pieces are harmonious, his drawings are incredibly accurate and the addressed subjects are diverse. The artist portrays personages that resemble nobility in wonderful and colorful landscapes. His paintings resemble tales, enchanting fables that lead the viewer to dream of distant lands and ancient times. George Corominas uses oïl paint, and just like Dutch painters, he makes his pigments himself. Having won many prestigious titles and awards, Georges Corominas is very popular among collectors. He is the creator of the stamp 0.60 selected by the Prince and Princess of Monaco and has done the portraits of Juan Carlos, Hassan II and Pope John Paul II. His work is exhibited all around the world. His paintings are present in the Consulate of the Royal Court of Spain, in the Vatican Museum, in the Embassy of Morocco, Japan, Middle East, the United States etc. The artist is cited in the "Dictionary Drouot Cotation" and "Akun". 01 Painting by Orientalist Artists, The Art of War, Eugène Delacroix's Collision of the Moorish Horsemen, with footnotes #98

Eugène Delacroix (French, 1798-1863)
Collision of the Moorish Horsemen, c. 1843-1844
Oil on canvas
H: 32 x W: 39 in. (81.3 x 99.1 cm)
The Walters Art Museum

"During their military exercises, which consist of riding their horses at full-speed and stopping them suddenly after firing a shot, it often happens that the horses carry away their riders and fight each other when they collide."

Delacroix uses fluid brush work to capture the color and movement of an Arab Fantasia, or ceremonial cavalry charge, mimicking battle, which he witnessed at the court of Sultan Abd-er-Rahmen of Morocco (1778-1859). More on this painting

Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (26 April 1798 – 13 August 1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school.

As a painter and muralist, Delacroix's use of expressive brushstrokes and his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, the Scottish author Walter Scott and the German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens and painters of the Venetian Renaissance, with an attendant emphasis on colour and movement rather than clarity of outline and carefully modelled form. Dramatic and romantic content characterized the central themes of his maturity, and led him not to the classical models of Greek and Roman art, but to travel in North Africa, in search of the exotic. Friend and spiritual heir to Théodore Géricault, Delacroix was also inspired by Lord Byron, with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces of the sublime", of nature in often violent action.

However, Delacroix was given to neither sentimentality nor bombast, and his Romanticism was that of an individualist. In the words of Baudelaire, "Delacroix was passionately in love with passion, but coldly determined to express passion as clearly as possible." More on Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix

01 Orientalist Painting, Mattéo Brondy's Fantasia , with footnotes, #113

Mattéo Brondy (1866-1944)
Fantasia
Watercolor on paper

Private collection

Fantasia is a traditional exhibition of horsemanship in the Maghreb performed during cultural festivals and for Maghrebi wedding celebrations. It is present in Algeria, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger and Tunisia. It is attested in the ancient Numidian times during which it was practiced by the Numidian cavalry. Historian Carlos Henriques Pereira stated that the North African fantasia also called barud is a modern watered down version of a Numidian military technique.

The fantasia is considered a cultural performance and a form of martial art; it also symbolizes a strong relationship between the man (or woman) and the horse, as well as an attachment to tradition. According to Jean-Pierre Digard, it is a watered down version of the Numidian cavalry charge.

Fantasia performances usually take place during local seasonal, cultural or religious festivals. More on Fantasia

Alphonse Clément André Brondy, known as Mattéo Brondy, (April 9, 1886 in Paris -1944 in Meknes, Morocco) was a French military veterinarian and painter. He is most known for the paintings of Morocco that became travel posters. His first works, exhibited from 1909 at the Salon des Indépendants and the French Artists Salon, met with success .

Brondy was a student at the National Veterinary School of Alfort in 1889. In the same year he completed an internship at the Saumur Cavalry School . Brondy was assigned, as a veterinary assistant, in 1891. He returned to France in 1894 to enter the Académie Julian in Paris. He was then admitted to Adolphe Déchenaud's workshop.

Brondy arrived in Morocco around 1915 again as a military veterinarian. He participated in armed expeditions in the Middle Atlas and Upper Moulouya, in the northeast of Morocco. He brought back some sketches and watercolors. In 1918, Brondy moved to Meknes as a municipal veterinarian. The Berber hinterland of the city also offered varied landscapes: plains, mountains and springs. All lit by this Afro-Mediterranean light that many artists have tried to capture .

Brondy founded with other French artists living in Morocco an artistic society called the Association of French painters and sculptors of Morocco. There are twelve member artists. The group was very reserved and avoided drawing in public without the consent of the neighborhood. He spent days working in the famous stud farms in Meknes. He executed watercolors near the Bab-el-Khémis or Bab-Berdaïne markets. He carefully noted the architecture of historic monuments. Brondy was the president of the tourist office of the city of Meknès and therefore the great promoter He made many splendid posters. These posters are not forgotten and continue to be published in the form of postcards and used as illustration for books. More on Mattéo Brondy

Edouard Verschaffelt was a Belgian orientalist painter born in Ghent in 1874 and died in Bou Saâda in 1955. He was deeply rooted in Algeria. He produced paintings of the roots and passion of this Algerian reality, so abused by orientalist exoticism. Edouard Verschaffelt took a contrary view of academic, colonial Orientalism. A pupil of the Antwerp School of Fine Arts, he carries with him, from the beginning, the indelible traces of Flemish painting and the attraction of Impressionism.

Unlike other Orientalists attracted by North Africa, Edouard Verschaffelt came to Algeria in 1919 to flee the German occupation of Belgium during the First World War. He settles in the country and immediately felt a fascination for Bou Saâda, that he adopted from the outset. Bou Saâda was, at the time, the "stronghold" ofDinet who is a notable of the city especially He converted to Islam; which gives him an extraordinary aura to the Aboriginal population.

After the death of his wife, Verschaffelt marries an Algerian, from the tribe Ouled Sidi Brahim, who appears in the many paintings he devoted to him throughout his life. More on Edouard Verschaffelt

Hassan El Glaoui (1924–2018) was a Moroccan figurative painter best known for his depictions of fantasia horsemen. El Glaoui was born in Marrakesh, Morocco, to the last Pasha of Marrakesh, Thami El Glaoui. The artist credited British Prime Minister Winston Churchill with convincing his powerful father to let him pursue painting as a career, particularly after a 1943 meeting when the Pasha sought and received Churchill's opinion of his son's paintings. The son was the scion to a 300-year-old dynasty over the Berbers, but went into exile following his father's death, with which his family's wealth was confiscated and Hassan El Glaoui himself jailed. He moved to a suburb of Paris upon his release. Beginning in the early 1950s, El Glaoui trained in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. He returned to Morocco after 15 years, in 1965. His first show was held under a tent in Morocco.

His paintings follow the Moroccan figurative tradition, and his main subjects are military horses and their riders. He rose to prominence in the 1980s with his modernist figurative paintings of fantasia horsemen and landscapes. The artist was later exhibited widely in Europe and the United States, among other places. He held solo shows in Paris (1950), New York (1952, 1967), London (1960), Brussels (1969), and Casablanca, and his works are collected in the Royal Palace Collection in Fez, Morocco, and the Parliament Collection in Rabat.[6] In exile in New York, he stood out in his djellaba and retained his polite demeanor.

El Glaoui died on June 21, 2018 in Rabat, aged 93. More on Hassan El Glaoui
